Center for Outpatient Care

Massachusetts General Hospital / North Shore Medical Center

The 122,000-square-foot Center for Outpatient Care exemplifies the collaboration between a community hospital and a major academic medical center. The first of its kind in the greater Boston area, the Center provides patients with numerous suites for minimally invasive surgery and advanced imaging services. In addition to serving as the benchmark for a suburban hospital, the MGH/NSMC Center for Outpatient Care is a model of patient-centered care in its design.

“Success throughout planning and construction of the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient care was defined by collaboration among a wide array of project participants. With so much at stake, cooperation became critical to overcome numerous obstacles that faced the project. Walsh Brothers was essential to the project’s success. Their flexibility and willingness to communicate made it possible to work across boundaries of affiliation and put the greater good and success of the project first.”

The panoramic windows of the facility’s 24 infusion bays provide a soothing environment with views of tidal wetlands, marshes, and a healing garden with perennial plants and flowers. Even the oncology waiting area is infused with natural light and offers views of the lush surroundings. The facility includes a two-story atrium, advanced outpatient surgical suites, a healing garden, 24 infusion bays, 13 patient exam rooms, a pharmacy, a linear accelerator, 26 pre- and post-operative recovery rooms, multidisciplinary vascular services and a mobile MRI.

Extensive options analyses and studies of alternative facade and building systems, as well as constructability advice and extensive budgeting at various design points ensured that the project would ultimately be priced in the marketplace well within the owner’s required budget and yielded a world-class suburban medical facility that is typically found in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area.
