Walsh Brothers Project Wins 2015 AGC Build New England Award

BOSTON, MA, November, 2015 – Walsh Brothers, Incorporated was recently honored at the annual Association of General Contractors of Massachusetts "Build New England Awards" program for its work on the Brigham and Women's Hospital Patient Parking Garage and Thea and James M. Stoneman Centennial Park.

The "Build New England Awards" recognize the concept of teamwork in building tomorrow's facilities including the project teams' collaborative approach to planning, designing and building facilities that meet the vision and goals of the owner and enhance the community in which the project resides.

The Brigham and Women's Hospital Patient Parking Garage and Thea and James M. Stoneman Centennial Park, located in Boston's busy Longwood Medical Area, provides a 4-story, 400-car underground parking facility for patients and family members of the hospital. This much-needed garage is topped with a 40,000 square-foot public park that serves as a new gateway into the Brigham and Women's Hospital campus.

Walsh Brothers was chosen for this sensitive job due to the firm's radical departure from what was originally requested in the project's Basis of Design and proposing an alternative strategy that eventually saved Brigham & Women's Hospital millions of dollars all while achieving the required 400-car capacity garage and green space.

Brigham & Women's entrusted Walsh Brothers with the full responsibility of the project under a Design/Build agreement of managing the site constraints, sequencing and engineering challenges. This complex job, including the blasting of 12,600 cubic yards of ledge just 24 inches from three functional hospital buildings and a residential urban neighborhood, was completed, on budget and on schedule. Multiple design partners and subcontractors were critical to this successful effort including Simon Design Engineering and HDR Architecture, Inc., J. Derenzo Company, G&C Concrete and Xquisite Landscaping.

The Brigham and Women's Hospital project has also been awarded the 2015 Preservation Achievement Award from the Boston Preservation Alliance. This prestigious award is bestowed annually to honor outstanding achievements in historic preservation combined with compatible new construction.
