BOSTON, MA, May 3, 2017 – Walsh Brothers, Incorporated was honored for the fourth time by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), New England Chapter, for its excellence in the pre-construction and construction management of the City of Lynn’s new Thurgood Marshall Middle School. This $68 million, 182,000 square-foot 4-story building houses 1,100 students and features brick masonry and a significant glass front designed around a central entranceway.
In addition the school was turned over to the students and teachers four months ahead of schedule, under budget, and Walsh Brothers reported zero safety incidents. This is particularly notable for a complex project that faced difficult weather conditions over 24 months. Expert planning by the Walsh Brothers team and the latest in technologies also helped to eliminate any detrimental change orders during construction.
As part of the award consideration, CMAA cited excellence in the following:
- Collaboration with multiple stakeholders
- Complexity of this state-of-the-art educational facility
- A sensitive construction site adjacent to active MBTA tracks and within a residential neighborhood
- A culture of continuous improvement in design and scheduling throughout the process
- LEED requirements
- Sequencing and planning
- Innovation and creativity
- Cost management
- Partnering and problem solving
- Communicating with the owner, design team and construction team
“Walsh Brothers delivered a high quality project in a short timeframe. There was a robust quality control presence with two Superintendents and an Assistant Superintendent on site for the majority of construction. Walsh Brothers was very attentive throughout the construction process and the end product was such that the Massachusetts School Building Authority has allowed the school to be used as a “Model School” and is under consideration to be used as a “Model School” state-wide for future school building projects,” said Lynn Stapleton, Owner’s Project Manager, LeftField.
“Our goal as a firm is to provide our clients with a foolproof building plan ensuring an on time, on budget and safe project,” said Richard Walsh, President and CEO, Walsh Brothers, Incorporated. “We thank the CMAA for this important award and for taking the time to recognize the strategic thinking behind our effort to deliver this quality project.”
