BOSTON, Massachusetts, February 26, 2019 – Walsh Brothers, Incorporated announced that it has successfully completed substantial renovations within the Yawkey Ambulatory Care Center for Boston Medical Center (BMC). The project team executed the renovation of 26,000 square feet on the fifth floor, with occupied clinical spaces immediately above, below and adjacent, while maintaining operations using a highly unique and creative approach.

“After thoroughly assessing the marketplace, we are delighted that BMC recognized Walsh Brothers as the best health care builder to manage construction of this state-of-the-art facility, including a pediatric intensive care unit, all in the midst of the active urban medical center,” said Richard Walsh, President and Chief Executive Officer, Walsh Brothers. “This partnership with BMC is exemplary of our capabilities, with a significant portfolio of experience in the health care arena. I’d like to congratulate the entire team for their on-time accomplishments on this large project, particularly given the sensitivities of working around occupied spaces, and thank the hospital staff for being truly collaborative partners. At Walsh Brothers, we are dedicated to providing a level of service that goes above and beyond that of a traditional construction manager, and we continue to deliver on that effort.”

Walsh Brothers utilized Lean delivery methods to execute the schedule and plan all activities, including procurement, and creatively divide the space into working zones, which enabled each trade to streamline the renovations and maximize efficiencies. Developing design assist packages for individual trades, such as millwork and doors, frames and hardware, further allowed the design to continue at the rate required to meet the deadlines. The collaborative approach, shared with BMC and lead designer Tsoi Kobus, created an integrated team that focused on the end goal and enhanced decision making. After a three-month abatement period, the Walsh Brothers team completed renovations within only six months, delivering new Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care, Ante-Natal Testing, Family Medicine, as well as renovated waiting and check-in areas for the adjacent OB/GYN Clinic. The heightened communication and cooperation between the Owner, design team and trades enabled this project to be completed with no impact to facility staff and visitors throughout construction.

The project is part of BMC’s overall clinical campus redesign project to ensure excellent patient care, keep up with advancements in health care trends and eliminate operational inefficiencies. Walsh Brothers’ many years of experience expertly building within similar sensitive environments of care proved to be invaluable on this vital project.

“Walsh Brothers has demonstrated significant expertise on large, urban health care renovation projects,” said Robert Biggio, Senior Vice President for Facilities and Support Services at BMC. . “We were particularly appreciative of Walsh Brothers’ ability to complete complex construction work without interfering with the ongoing care of our patients.”
