Berkeley Building Renovations

John Hancock Financial Services

Located in Boston’s Back Bay, the Berkeley Building is well known among Bostonians for the weather beacon at its summit. The renovation to transform this historic building into modern corporate headquarters was comprised of 26 floors of refurbished space, the replacement of 1,500 windows, and the gut and refit of 1 million square feet with high-end finishes and customized details.

“Steady blue, clear view. Flashing blue, clouds due. Steady red, rain ahead. Flashing red, snow instead.”

The building’s exterior restoration called for one of the highest staged areas ever to be erected in New England at the time. The tight constraints of the crowded urban site required carefully scheduled just-in-time delivery of materials. To minimize the displacement of John Hancock employees during construction, the project was scheduled into separate multi-floor phases. The team successfully achieved the project’s demanding schedule by managing more than 2,000 tradesmen working 3.6 million hours.
